Dolly Children Foundation’s Approach to Supporting Nigerian Children

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde

The Dolly Children Foundation has been making a significant impact in Nigeria since 2009, positively affecting over 23,000 children across six states.

The organization is dedicated to providing access to quality education, healthcare, and emotional support to underprivileged children.

Founder and Executive Director Adedolapo Osuntuyi shared the foundation’s philosophy. He said, “We believe every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves a chance to thrive. Our focus is on nurturing not just their academic skills but their emotional and physical well-being. We are committed to creating safe spaces where children can express themselves, learn, and grow into confident adults.”

The foundation addresses various challenges faced by Nigerian children, including limited access to education and basic necessities. Adedolapo also said, “In Nigeria, there’s a tradition of passing children around within families and communities, but this doesn’t always ensure their safety or access to education. Many drop out early to learn trades like driving or farming. We also see heartbreaking issues like domestic violence, rape, and sexual abuse that leave deep trauma in children. Our work is about addressing these issues holistically.”

The foundation’s initiatives include:

1. Education:
Reading Clubs: Improved literacy for over 15,460 children.
After-School and Summer Programs: Supported over 13,650 children.
School Refurbishment Projects: Enhanced learning environments.
Dolly Star School: A free school providing quality education to 72 children.

2. Health and Well-being:
Health checks and education.
Counseling and trauma support.
Home visits and mentoring.

3. Community Engagement and Advocacy:
Celebrating international days to raise awareness.
Organizing excursions to broaden children’s horizons.

4. Art and Expression:
Art therapy to cope with trauma and build confidence.

Adedolapo’s personal experience drives her passion. She said, “My father’s story is a testament to how lack of opportunity can shape a life. Despite his hard work, he couldn’t access secondary education due to economic hardships. That personal experience fuels my passion to ensure children don’t face the same setbacks.”

The foundation relies on donations and partnerships to operate. Adedolapo said, “Our partners are the backbone of our success. We have collaborations with NGOs, private sector entities, and even individuals who believe in our mission.”

Future plans include expanding the school network, supporting children through university education, and launching new initiatives like the Dolly Champions Football Club.

The foundation has achieved notable successes, including: A beneficiary advocating for children’s rights at the United Nations, Former beneficiaries gaining admission into private Secondary Schools and Universities, and Beneficiaries returning as interns or mentors.
