Seun Kuti, a musician and activist, has urged Nigerians to go beyond just protesting against bad governance and work towards achieving real political change.
He made this statement during a recent appearance on the Rubbin Minds show, where he emphasized that simply holding demonstrations is not enough to solve the country’s problems.
Kuti referenced Martin Luther King’s quote, saying that it’s better to live in a just war zone than in a peaceful place with no rights. He pointed out that Nigerians were once known for their resilience and happiness, but now that they’re speaking up for their rights, they’re being silenced.
Kuti criticized the current state of activism in Nigeria, saying that protests alone are not enough. He emphasized the need for organized and systemic change, urging Nigerians to come together and demand power. He said, “Protesting is like a child complaining to a loving parent, but our leaders don’t care.” He said that Nigerians need to send a signal that they are ready to replace the government with new people who represent them.
Kuti also spoke out against the current capitalist system, calling for a shift towards socialism. He said, It’s not enough that people protest, it is the start of the dance. We need to mass mobilise into a socialist identity to realise this country from this capitalist nonsense we are experiencing.”
