The American Corner Lekki, in partnership with Naija Poetry Fest, hosted a vibrant celebration of Black History Month on Friday, 31st October 2025, at its Lagos space. Themed “Across the Ocean, Sail Away,” the event gathered poets, artists, musicians, and cultural enthusiasts for an afternoon of reflection, performance, and community spirit.

Brilliantly anchored by Isidinma, fondly known as Flowers, the programme opened with a moving Black History Month documentary that set an inspiring tone for the day. This was followed by the screening of Canvas of Freedom—a poetry exhibition film by Lanre Sonde that explored themes of identity, memory, and creative resistance through powerful poetic expression.

The stage came alive with captivating performances by Kachi, Moyo and Shigo Arts, which thrilled the audience with an energetic display of African drumming and dance that filled the venue with rhythm and joy. Guests also took part in Poetic Games, an interactive segment that sparked laughter, creativity, and spontaneous brilliance among performers and attendees alike.

In a goodwill message, the American Corner Lekki team underscored the event’s importance in promoting art, dialogue, and cross-cultural understanding. The celebration concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Mrs. Mbagwu, who commended both participants and organisers for their passion and dedication.

Convener Godson Osarenren expressed his delight at the event’s success, extending gratitude to all partners and media supporters including Storytide Media, Nigerian NewsDirect, and Splash9ja, whose coverage amplified the reach and impact of the celebration.
The Black History Month Celebration at American Corner Lekki stood as a vibrant reminder of the power of art to unite, educate, and honour shared heritage across continents — a testament to creativity as a bridge between cultures and generations.
