In response to mounting pressures from the recent nationwide strike by the Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Federal Government has taken steps to address one of the unions’ primary grievances: delayed payments.
The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) announced in a statement from Abuja that funds have been released to cover withheld salaries of NASU members and benefits for retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS).
The statement noted that payments to non-academic staff in federal universities have already begun, with several employees confirming receipt. This action underscores the government’s stated commitment to addressing the welfare needs of both active and retired federal workers, despite recent setbacks.
The ongoing strike by NASU and SSANU has highlighted longstanding issues around payment inconsistencies, which union members attribute to the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
Additionally, union leaders have cited delays in earned allowances, arrears of the national minimum wage, and consequential adjustments as key points of contention.
NASU and SSANU have urged government stakeholders to honor past agreements to prevent further disruptions in Nigeria’s higher education system. However, the OAGF’s recent release did not address payments for SSANU members, leaving the potential for continued unrest.
As the situation unfolds, many are hopeful that the government’s recent financial commitment will lay the groundwork for a more stable academic environment nationwide.
