The Nigerian government has announced plans to accommodate exceptionally talented students under the age of 18 into university, despite the newly enforced 18-year minimum age requirement.
Speaking at the 68th National Council on Education meeting, Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman clarified that the age limit policy only applies to tertiary institutions, not O’level examinations.
“We acknowledge that some children are exceptionally intelligent, and we will work out guidelines to deal with cases of genuine exceptionally intelligent learners,” Prof. Mamman said.
The government is also focusing on skills acquisition, ensuring students acquire at least two skills at basic education levels. The council is considering a curriculum review to align the education sector with the digital age.
“This review is premised on the advancement in technology and the need for students to be properly equipped to meet the challenges of the digital age,” Prof. Mamman added.
The 68th National Council on Education meeting aims to address key issues in the education sector, including innovation, digital technology, and entrepreneurship.
