Governor to Traditional Ruler In Nigeria

There has been much talk about the uniqueness of Olubadan Adewolu Ladoja as a former Governor. Historic. However, he is not the first former Governor to become a Traditional Ruler.

The honour of being the first likely goes to King Alfred Diete-Spiff, first Military Governor of old Rivers State (1967-1975). He was crowned the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass in 1978. He is still going strong.

For Civilian Governors, that will be Emir Awwal Ibrahim of Suleija. He was Governor of Niger State from 1979 to 1983. He became Emir in 1993, was deposed and later reinstated.

There have been others too, especially in the North. Generals Sanni Sami (Emir of Zuru) and Muhammadu Jega (Emir of Gwandu) readily come to mind.

However, Olubadan Ladoja is the first in the South West.
