Adewale Adeogun, Acting Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime University’s Governing Council, is sounding the alarm about the institution’s struggles despite being six years old.
He’s calling for swift action to tackle the challenges facing the university, emphasizing the need for government intervention, a permanent campus, and sufficient funding.
Adeogun expressed his disappointment, saying, “It is disheartening to see that despite being a specialised university, Nigerian Maritime University is still struggling to find its footing.” He believes it’s crucial to secure government support, philanthropic contributions, and community involvement to move the university forward.
Two key issues require immediate attention: the Nigerian Maritime University Bill and the NIMASA Act. Adeogun urges authorities to hurry the bill’s passage through the House of Representatives and its signing into law by the President. He also advocates for reinstating the university under NIMASA’s purview to ensure adequate funding and support.
The Nigerian Maritime University has faced setbacks due to suspended projects initiated by NIMASA. Collaboration between the Governing Council and University Management is vital to addressing these challenges. Adeogun pledged commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration, urging stakeholders to join forces in supporting the university’s growth.
He said, “We must work together to create a conducive environment for our students and staff to thrive.” With the right support, Nigerian Maritime University can become a leading maritime institution in Nigeria.
