Nurse Recounts Events Leading to Mohbad’s Death in Court Testimony

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

Feyisayo Ogedengbe, an auxiliary nurse, recently testified before a coroner’s court regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Ogedengbe began her testimony by sharing her educational background, stating that she underwent nursing training at Cornerstone Hospital in Akute, Ogun State, from 2014 to 2017. After completing her training, she worked at the hospital for a year before relocating.

According to Ogedengbe, on September 11, 2023, she received a call from one of her clients, Ayobami Sodiq, also known as “Spending,” requesting that she administer a tetanus injection to a friend who had sustained an injury to his hand. Spending suspected that there might be a piece of glass in the wound.

Due to heavy traffic, Ogedengbe said she was unable to visit the patient on the same day. However, she arrived at the patient’s house, located in Orchid Estate, Lekki, around 2:30 pm the following day. It was only upon arrival that she discovered the patient was Mohbad.

Ogedengbe said she met Mohbad, his wife, and his friend Ayobami in a room. She observed that the lower part of Mohbad’s right hand was swollen and proceeded to administer a tetanus injection on his upper arm, using the intra-muscular route.

According to her, before administering the injection, she asked if Mohbad was an ulcer patient. Mohbad said yes, making her decide against administering a diclofenac injection. Instead, she opted to give him a paracetamol injection.

Ogedengbe explained that she administered 4ml of paracetamol and 1ml of water, totaling 5ml, which is the standard dosage for adults. She also gave Mohbad an intravenous injection of ceftriaxone, which she diluted to 10ml and administered slowly.

She said as she was administering the ceftriaxone injection, Mohbad said he wanted to vomit. Although surprised, she removed the injection, and Mohbad proceeded to vomit in the toilet. Upon returning, he sat on the floor in the room.

She noticed goosebumps all over Mohbad’s body and pointed this out to his wife. His wife said the goosebumps was Mohbad’s normal reaction to injections and suggested pouring water on him to reduce the symptoms.

Mohbad’s wife took him to the bathroom and poured water on his head. Meanwhile, Ayobami notified Ogedengbe that they needed to locate the nearest pharmacy. However, there were no vehicles available on the premises, prompting them to run to the nearest pharmacy.

At the pharmacy, Ogedengbe attempted to procure hydrocortisone and saline infusion to treat Mohbad’s allergic reaction and dehydration. However, the pharmacy did not have the necessary medications, leading Ogedengbe and Ayobami to run to another pharmacy within the estate.

Upon arriving at the second pharmacy, they got the required medications. However, by the time they returned to Mohbad’s residence, it was approximately 3 pm.

Ayobami informed Ogedengbe that Mohbad was convulsing, making her to advise that arrangements be made to take him to the hospital immediately.

When Ogedengbe and Ayobami returned to Mohbad’s residence, they found that he had already been carried outside. Due to the circumstances, Ogedengbe was unable to administer the hydrocortisone injection and saline infusion.

A neighbor offered to assist them in getting Mohbad to the hospital. Ogedengbe sat in the front passenger seat alongside Mohbad’s wife, while Ayobami, Mohbad’s brother Adura, and Mohbad himself occupied the back seat.

Due to heavy traffic, they decided to transport Mohbad to the hospital on a motorbike. Ogedengbe ran after the motorbike, navigating through the traffic.

It took approximately 20 minutes to arrive at the first hospital. Upon arrival, the medical personnel were initially hesitant to attend to Mohbad, which almost led to a chaotic situation. Eventually, they attempted to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him.

The doctor on call at the hospital proclaimed Mohbad “brought in dead.” Ogedengbe was shocked and confused by this declaration.

The doctor questioned Ogedengbe about the medications she had administered to Mohbad. She explained the medications and dosages she had used.

After leaving the first hospital, Darosha met them and insisted on taking Mohbad to another hospital. Mohbad was placed in Darosha’s vehicle, but there was no space for Ogedengbe.
