Rivers State, Nigeria, is reeling from violence as thugs attacked Local Government Area (LGA) secretariats, resulting in devastating consequences. The unrest has claimed at least five lives and left four secretariats in ashes. The affected LGAs include Eleme, Emohua, Ikwerre, Oyigbo, Khana, and Ahoada-East.
The violence erupted when thugs stormed the secretariats, setting buildings ablaze and causing widespread destruction. In Eleme, the thugs reportedly threw explosives, believed to be dynamite, into the secretariat, shattering many properties. Similarly, in Emohua, youths attacked the secretariat immediately after the new chairman swore in his deputy and 14 councillors.
President Bola Tinubu has swiftly responded to the crisis, directing the police to provide security to LG officials, restore peace, and bring the situation under control. The President emphasized the importance of safeguarding government facilities built with public funds and urged political leaders to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.
The police have also weighed in on the crisis, with Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi stating that they will not engage in a media dispute with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Adejobi’s statement underscores the need for cooperation and calm in resolving the crisis.
The violence has sent shockwaves through the affected communities, leaving residents in a state of fear and panic. As the situation continues to unfold, concerns about the implications for democracy and governance in Rivers State are growing. The international community is watching closely, urging all parties to resolve their differences peacefully and respect the rule of law.
