90% of Nigerian songs lack substance – Burna Boy claims

Grammy award-winning artist, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has claimed that the range of songs coming out of Nigeria and Africa at large lacks substance.

He said this on Tuesday in an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.

He said: “90% of them have almost no real life experiences that they can understand which is why you hear most of Nigerian music or i’ll say African music… Afrobeats as you people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There’s no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything, its just a great time, its an amazing time. By the end of the day, life is not an amazing time, no matter how nice of a time you having now or you are had at some point or you plan to have, you are still going to face life. so it’s like for me, music should be that, music should be the essence of the artiste, me speaking for myself, the artiste is the person who has good days bad days great days and worse days.”
