Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has unveiled plans to rename Benue State University in honor of the state’s former governor, Rev Fr Moses Adasu.
This announcement was made during the university’s combined convocation ceremony, where Governor Alia revealed that an executive bill has been forwarded to the State House of Assembly to formalize the name change to Reverend Father Moses Adasu University.
Rev Fr Moses Adasu, a Catholic priest, served as governor of Benue State from 1991 to 1992 and founded the university during his tenure. Governor Alia stated, “As a way of honouring the founder of this institution, our administration has sent an executive bill to the state assembly for this University to be named after the founder, Rev Fr Moses Adasu.”
In addition to the renaming, Governor Alia announced plans to establish a satellite campus at Adikpo in Kwande Local Government Area, ensuring access to university education for residents of Benue North East senatorial district. He urged the university management to collaborate with the State Government to facilitate the satellite campus’s realization.
Furthermore, Governor Alia announced the donation of 500 computers to the university’s computer-based test center and awarded 100% master’s degree scholarships to all first-class degree graduates. He encouraged the graduates to become ambassadors of the institution and the state by upholding integrity and hard work values.
Governor Alia commended the university management for effectively implementing CEFTER and pledged to partner with the World Bank to address post-harvest losses. He also encouraged graduates to venture into farming, promising that his administration would provide funds and farm inputs free of charge to support their livelihoods.
