Liya Explains Exit from Davido’s Label

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

Liya, singer and songwriter, has opened up about her exit from Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). She revealed that she needed more for herself personally and professionally.

The artist was the label’s first female signing in October 2020, and she announced her exit in 2023. She said, “Nopee, But #30bg for lifee” when asked about her status with DMW on Instagram.

In a recent interview on ‘Wahala with Josy Anne,’ Liya shared that leaving wasn’t easy. She said, “Why did I leave? I just wanted more for myself, as a person and as an artiste. I wanted more for myself. It was sad, it was depressing, I was tired, I was sick, but it was a decision that I had to make for myself.”

She faced criticism and judgment, with people calling her lazy and saying she wasn’t doing enough. She said, “They called me names. People saying, Oh, she’s just lazy. She doesn’t know what she’s doing. They’re just pouring money on her, and she’s not doing anything for over a year or two years.”

Liya also shared that she stopped managing her Instagram posts for years, relying on her manager. She said, “And all that period, I just did not know how to post by myself. For the past two or three years. I never posted myself on Instagram. I always have my manager post for me.” She also praised her manager for being patient, saying, “He was tired, but I’m so glad he understood. He was very patient with me.”

Davido’s label was founded in 2016, and it has signed over 10 artistes, including Mayorkun, Peruzzi, and Morravey.
