Use Of Hot Plate And Ring Boilers Banned In UNIBEN

The use of hot plates, ring boilers and gas cookers has been banned in The University of Benin.

This decision was announced in a circular by Registrar Ademola Bobola. It aims to reduce the university’s expenses on energy. Immediate rustication will be given to students who violate the order.

The ban is a direct response to the recent electricity crisis that affected the university which led to increase in monthly billing from N88 million to N250 million by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC). As a result of this, there was disconnection of power supply to the university’s two campuses which led the students to protest on July 3, 2024.

The protests led to the temporary closure of the university by the Senate to maintain law and order. However, with the university’s reopening, Bobola talked about the need for the students to follow the management’s arrangements for electricity supply, distribution, and utilization on campus.

Students are expected to pay their outstanding levies with proof of payment. This is required to access exam halls. Payment of outstanding charges will be strictly monitored to ensure compliance.

Students are also expected to conduct themselves in an orderly manner. They must not engage in any unauthorized assemblies within the university.
