LASU Shut Down as Staff Unions Declare Indefinite Strike

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

A joint action by major staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) has brought the institution to a hold.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have initiated an indefinite strike.

In a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the staff unions declared the strike. The action affects all staff across the University’s campuses, including Ojo, Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), and Epe.

The union said, “The indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University and will remain in force until all demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities.”

The timing of the strike coincides with the upcoming second-semester exams for the 2024/2025 academic session, potentially disrupting the academic calendar. Thousands of students may face uncertainty as a result.

Although specific demands haven’t been fully disclosed, sources indicate that staff welfare, delayed entitlements, and communication breakdowns with management are central to the dispute. The University authorities have not yet responded officially to the situation.
