By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are just one year away, and the organizers have introduced Ayo, a lively lion mascot that carries the spirit of Senegalese youth.

Ayo, meaning “joy” in Yoruba, represents the energy, optimism, and cultural pride of West Africa’s younger generation.

The mascot’s debut shows the Games’ focus on celebration, unity, and cultural heritage. Ayo wears a traditional Fulani Tingandé hat, symbolizing wisdom and dignity, and showcasing Senegal’s rich cultural roots.

The official unveiling took place at Dakar’s Grand Théâtre. It was attended by dignitaries including Senegalese President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye and IOC President, Kirsty Coventry.

Kirsty Coventry praised Ayo, saying, “These Games are a milestone for Africa. They will inspire a new generation and unlock opportunities across the continent. Ayo represents the spirit of joy and dynamism that defines the youth of Senegal and beyond. I look forward to celebrating with everyone in a year’s time.”

Ayo was chosen through a nationwide competition among middle and secondary school students. This led to creativity and engagement among young people. The Games will feature 2,700 young athletes competing in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly from 31 October to 13 November 2026.

The countdown to the Games includes the launch of the official clock and the Dakar en Jeux cultural festival. This will be from 4 to 9 November.
