PDP governors are gathering in Ibadan, Oyo State between Sunday and Monday, to discuss the party’s future in the midst of growing concerns over internal conflicts and the 2027 general elections.
Key issues on the agenda include:
– Party Leadership Crisis: The governors will deliberate on the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling reinstating Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, despite their preference for Sunday Ude-Okoye. They have obtained the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the ruling to guide their discussions.
– United Opposition Coalition: The meeting will explore strategies for building a broader opposition front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). However, sources indicate that differing ambitions and weak coordination have hindered progress, with one source warning, “The opposition coalition risks becoming an individual affair. Nigerians want change, but the opposition leaders appear uncommitted.”
– Rivers State Crisis: The governors will discuss the federal government’s declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who serves as the PDP Governors Forum’s vice chair.
– Internal Divisions: PDP insiders reveal that over 75% of party members are disillusioned with internal chaos and poor leadership, with many considering leaving the party. A party insider warned, “People are mentally checked out of the PDP. Unless something drastic is done, the party could lose relevance before 2027.”
– Rescue Efforts: Several PDP elders, including former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, have begun consultations to reposition the party and prevent collapse.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine the party’s direction and potential for success in the 2027 elections. As one source noted, “The governors are expected to be frank with each other, discuss issues, and take proactive steps to preserve the PDP. The future of the party hinges on what they decide in Ibadan.”
