President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Nigeria’s prestigious national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their bilateral meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday.
This award signifies Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to strengthening the Nigerian-Indian partnership.
Tinubu praised Modi’s leadership, saying, “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries. You represent a very strong commitment in democratic values and norms; winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.”
The President also highlighted the purpose of Modi’s visit, stating, “I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This is to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner.”
In response, Modi expressed sympathy for the recent floods in Nigeria, including the devastating Maiduguri flood, and pledged 20 tons of relief materials to support President Tinubu’s humanitarian efforts.
This historic visit marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has visited Nigeria in 17 years and is part of Modi’s three-nation tour, which also includes Brazil and Guyana.
The ceremony at the Presidential Villa featured a Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and the Indian and Nigerian national anthems.
