Accolades As UI Alumni Holds 2023 Annual Lecture

The Annual Alumni Lecture of the Oyo State branch of the University of Ibadan Alumni Association took place on November 24, 2023, at the renowned Trenchard Hall of the institution.

The event, presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, who also served as the Chairman of the occasion, was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administrative, Prof. Peter Olapegba.

In his opening speech, Olapegba highlighted the symbiotic relationship between the Alumni Association and the University. He emphasized the crucial support provided by the alumni towards the university’s growth, particularly in light of challenges from the government in funding Nigerian universities. Olapegba outlined the three primary ways through which universities generate funds: endowment, students’ school fees, and alumni engagement.

Furthermore, Olapegba acknowledged the significant contribution of the Alumni in 2021, where they played a vital role in contributing to the university’s finances. The Guest Speaker, Mr. Victor Etuokwu, Deputy Managing Director of Access Bank Plc, delivered a compelling address on the theme, “Tertiary Institutions As Catalyst For Transformational Leadership.”

Etuokwu emphasized that tertiary institutions serve as catalysts for nurturing transformational leaders. He viewed these institutions not merely as places of academic pursuit but as environments that offer opportunities for individuals to connect, exchange ideas, share dreams, and even forge partnerships. Etuokwu highlighted the role of universities in creating leaders through the relationships formed with peers, faculty, alumni, and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration, mentorship, and lifelong support.

Addressing the importance of building great institutions within Africa, Etuokwu stressed the need to pursue passions and priorities that contribute to both wealth creation and sustainability. The event saw the presence of distinguished personalities and alumni, including Mr. Tunde Olayiwol, Chairman UIAA Oyo State, Mr. Lekan Ajisafe, Mr. Agada Apoche, CEO of Pharmatek Directive, Mr. Tayo Malik, Mr. Niyi Toluwalope (representative for Ayodeji Afolabi), Prof. Alonge, and other members of the UIAA Oyo State executives.

The gathering also included students of the University, making the occasion a notable and well-attended event.
