The Benue Police Command has confirmed the rescue of 20 students from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos who were kidnapped by gunmen on August 15 while traveling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) Convention.
The students were abducted in Otukpo along with a House Officer and their rescue was confirmed by Police spokesperson Sewuese Anene on Friday evening.
Anene refused to provide further details on the rescue operation stating that information would be released the following morning.
The successful rescue comes five days after Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun deployed a squad to Benue and ordered the state’s Police Commissioner to relocate to Otukpo.
A combined team of security operatives, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, carried out the operation, securing the students’ freedom.
