At the just concluded National Delegate Convention of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) over the weekend, Mr. Adeniran Makinde (fta) has emerged as the new President unopposed. He succeeds Israel Eboh and has pledged to usher in a new era of unity, advocacy, and progress within the creative sector.
His election along with other executive members of the association took place at the assemblage of the Theatre Arts stakeholders in Nigeria.
Other Executives elected and saddled with the responsibility to run the affairs of the association are:
Deputy President, Oluwaseun Odukoya; Secretary General, Dr. Abiodun Olayiwola; Asst. Sec/Finance, Omolola Adamu; Director Publicity, Victor Nwokocha; Director Finance, Dr. Lucy Iseyen; Dir. Business, Agba-Anyim Godwin; Dir. Prod & Screening, Charles Nwaokolo; Chief Whip, Alex Akpuh.
The highly elated stage producer described his emergence as the new NANTAP President as an opportunity to contribute his quota to the development of the association.
In his Thank You remarks, Adeniran expressed heartfelt gratitude and a strong sense of duty in his beautifully crafted note with the Yoruba adage, “Mo ti gbe awo tàngánrán tí kò gbó dọ́ bọ́ fó” —”I have picked up a delicate eating plate that must not be broken.” His words not only conveyed his humility but also underscored the weight of responsibility that accompanies his new role.
He further said “This election is a testament to our collective dedication to the advancement of theatre and the creative industry in Nigeria,” as he accepted the mandate, the arts sector in Nigeria faces many hurdles—limited funding, policy neglect, dwindling opportunities, and the urgent need for stronger institutional support. These challenges are real, but they are not insurmountable.
We must be the change, and ensure that our contributions to society are recognized and respected. We will engage policymakers, forge strategic partnerships, and create sustainable opportunities for practitioners across all levels.
“This journey requires the collective effort of every member of NANTAP. I call on you to join with me in shaping a stronger, more vibrant association. Let us move beyond individual ambitions and embrace the spirit of collaboration, for it is only in unity that we will find strength.
“Together, we will elevate theatre arts in Nigeria to greater heights.
As we embark on this journey, I pledge to lead with integrity, transparency, and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of our profession. The road ahead will not be easy, but with determination and the support of each and every one of you, we will not only overcome our challenges—we will thrive. Thank you for this honour. Let us get to work”, he proudly submitted.
The stage is set, the audience is eager, and with Makinde Adeniran leading the charge, the Theatre Industry Nigeria might just be on the verge of its next golden era.
