Darren Jason Watkins Jr. popularly known as IShowSpeed, the 21-year-old YouTuber, is officially a Ghanaian citizen.
Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced that the influencer got a Ghanaian passport due to his “irrefutable ties” to the country.
The citizenship move aligns with Ghana’s Beyond the Return initiative, aiming to connect with the African diaspora. Ablakwa said that IShowSpeed’s cultural vibes and content showcasing Africa globally played a big part in the decision.
The statement read, “Following our discussions and subsequent confirmation of the irrefutable ties of IShowSpeed to Ghana, I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to IShowSpeed.”
Ablakwa also praised IShowSpeed for representing Ghana and Africa positively to his 50M+ YouTube subscribers. The streamer just ended a 20-country Africa Tour, highlighting the continent’s culture, tourism, tech, and more.
