Nigeria’s Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has revealed that President Bola Tinubu is committed to making the 2027 elections more transparent.

During a meeting with a European Union delegation in Abuja, Abbas stated that the National Assembly is working on amendments to the Electoral Act of 2022 to boost credibility and transparency in future polls.

The National Assembly is gathering concerns from the 2023 elections to address them legislatively. Abbas sought the EU delegation’s support for advocacy and public outreach.

Abbas said, “We in the National Assembly have also been busy working to gather as many issues as possible arising from the last elections, so that we can see how we can legislatively address them, so that our next election will be more transparent, acceptable, and in alignment with international standards.”

The EU delegation, led by Barry Andrews, praised the Assembly for its efforts in enhancing democracy. The delegation comprised EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot, election experts, and other officials.

Abbas emphasized the importance of collaboration with the House of Assembly on reforms.
