The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has denied reports of an inter-gang clash resulting in student deaths on campus.
According to Dr. Sam Kpenu, the university’s spokesman, the incident was simply a fight between students, and not a cult clash as reported by some media outlets.
Dr. Kpenu expressed concerns over the misreporting, stating, “We are aware of some inaccurate media reports suggesting that some students died during an incident on campus. Contrary to these claims, no student was killed or injured, it was a mere fight, it wasn’t a cult clash.”
The university’s management, security unit, and police intervened swiftly, and the students involved have been apprehended and are currently being detained and interrogated by the police.
Dr. Kpenu emphasized that the misinterpretation of the incident was unfair and stated the university’s commitment to professionalism in handling security matters.
UNIPORT has a zero-tolerance policy for cultism, bullying, and other violent or disruptive behaviors on campus. As Dr. Kpenu assured, “The university has zero tolerance for cultism, bullying, and any other violent or disruptive behaviour on campus. The university is calm, staff and students are going about their normal work and academic activities.”
This statement aims to reduce concerns and reassure students, staff, and the public that the situation is under control.
