Cuban musician Jose Manuel Carbajal Zaldivar, popularly known as “El Taiger,” has died at 37 after being hospitalized for a week due to a gunshot wound to the head.
El Taiger, known for blending reggaeton with traditional Cuban music, passed away in Miami, his family announced. The Cuban Institute of Music also confirmed his death.
Born in Cuba, El Taiger gained fame with hits like “La Historia,” “Papelito,” and “Habla Matador.” He had been based in the United States for several years.
Miami police found El Taiger unconscious in a car on October 3 and are investigating the shooting.
Tributes poured in from fans and fellow musicians, including legendary Cuban band Los Van Van, who mourned his death on Instagram.
“We are deeply saddened by your death, but we are proud to have known you and shared the stage,” Los Van Van wrote.
In Havana, scores gathered in a park to bid farewell to El Taiger, singing his songs, lighting candles, and turning on their phone lights in tribute.
“We are sad, very sad, but we are celebrating as he wanted, he said he wanted parties, joy,” said Yuli Mauro, 30, a fan.
El Taiger’s family thanked his medical team and those who offered prayers and tributes during his hospitalization.
“Turn up the volume of his music, dance, and celebrate his life,” they added.
