The Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kwara State, Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, has suggested that universities should make drug testing a compulsory requirement for newly admitted students as part of their admission process.
According to her, this would serve as a good approach to prevent drug abuse while providing early intervention and counseling for those already using drugs.
She said this during a recent radio program in Ilorin which was monitored by our correspondent.
Hajia Abiola-Popoola expressed her concern over the increasing number of drug users in the country especially among females. She warned it poses significant risks to families and the society as a whole.
She made mention of a 2018 survey which showed that 14.3 million people in Nigeria were using drugs. It also showed that one out of every seven persons in Nigeria were drug users and one out of every four drug users were woman. She emphasized that it is troubling as women play a critical role in taking care of the home. She said that their involvement in drug use can have serious consequences for the entire society.
