In a time of political and social upheaval, what is the truth behind the everyday American?
Between 2022 and 2024, award-winning Dutch photographer and filmmaker Robin de Puy traveled to the US to collect audio, film and photographic portraits of people she met along the way, creating a tableau of a cross-section of a divided nation.
In collaboration with WePresent, the extraordinary results are collected together for the first time on an exclusive microsite, under the name AMERICAN.
The project consists of 25 episodes in which we meet an extraordinary collection of people and hear their stories. The last nine episodes were newly captured in the summer of 2024, in the lead-up to one of the most tense elections the country has experienced. Through de Puy’s lens, Americans emerge not as stereotypes or abstractions, but as complex individuals with hopes, dreams, fears and a remarkable capacity to endure and inspire.
We encourage you to spend some time with the microsite and meet the extraordinary characters de Puy met on her journey to the heart of America.
