The stories broke few days ago and it has generated back n forth backlash and Industry watchers seems disoriented and disturbed by the development which will rub off negatively on the economy of the Nollywood Industry. However, things are becoming clearer and it is now crystal clear that NETFLIX isn’t leaving but suspending it’s commissioning of originals films/TV Series and content.
According to Nollywood Industry veteran Fidelis Duker on his Facebook, in his words ” Netflix did not leave Nigeria. They only suspended the commissioning ORIGINALS ….they are still Acquiring Films from Nigerian Filmmakers.
Like I said in a previous post …..Netflix didn’t leave Nigeria. It’s simply Return On Investment (ROI) concerns….. 169k subscribers in a 250m population is POOR.
Netflix: The challenge to the low subscribers number for Nigeria is not purely a Nollywood or audience problem. It’s institutional …cost of data, poor connectivity and power.
Netflix: S/A has 1.7m subscribers to its 64m population. The success of those numbers are a function of better connectivity, cost of data and importantly POWER.
The originals commissioning process refers to the steps Netflix takes to produce original content, such as TV series, movies, and documentaries. This process typically involves:
1. Idea generation and pitching
2. Script development and refinement
3. Project greenlighting
4. Pre-production planning
5. Production and filming
6. Post-production editing and visual effects
7. Final review and approval
By suspending the commissioning of originals in Nigeria, Netflix is essentially putting a hold on new original content productions in the country. However, as the post mentioned, they are still acquiring existing films from Nigerian filmmakers.
According to reports, Netflix suspended commissioning original content in Nigeria due to regulatory challenges and economic conditions. This means they won’t be producing new original content, like TV shows and movies, specifically made for the Nigerian market. However, they’ll still acquire and stream existing Nigerian films and content.
