The Federal Government yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing teachers’ welfare, emphasizing that their rewards should begin on earth, not just in heaven.
Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, made this pledge during a press briefing to mark the 2024 World Teachers’ Day.
“We are committed to boosting teachers’ professionalism for nation-building and national development,” Mamman said.
The government has established specialized universities of education, implemented bursary policies in Nigerian universities, and entered into bilateral agreements for chartered mobility.
In 2022, 3,317 students benefited from the bursary program. Additionally, 22 states have implemented the elongation of service years for teachers.
National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Amba, welcomed the initiatives but urged the government to implement a new salary scale for teachers nationwide.
Amba also called for action on housing estates, special allowances, and training programs for teachers.
Mamman stressed the importance of good working conditions and listening to teachers’ voices.
“Teachers will receive their rewards on earth, not just in heaven,” he said.
The renewed commitment aims to boost teachers’ morale and professionalism, enhancing Nigeria’s education sector
