The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken decisive action against 54 University of Calabar graduates who were improperly mobilized for service.
According to a statement by NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the corps’ Director General, Brigadier-General, Yusha’u Ahmed, praised the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi, for her role in exposing the fraudulent activities.
The Vice-Chancellor had brought to the NYSC’s attention, the presence of unauthorized names on the university’s list. This led to an investigation and eventually, the demobilization of the affected individuals.
The NYSC has also invalidated the certificates of 101 other graduates who were illegally mobilized between 2021 and 2023. The corps is taking steps to prevent unqualified individuals from obtaining Certificates of National Service, including collaborating with employers to verify the authenticity of certificates presented for job placement.
The university’s Pro-Chancellor, DIG Udom Ekpoudom, has pledged to address any staff involvement in the scandal.
