Supreme Court Confirms Diri’s Election Win in Bayelsa State

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

The Supreme Court has delivered a final verdict, affirming Senator Douye Diri’s victory as the legitimate governor of Bayelsa state.

In a united decision, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by Timipre Sylva and the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a lack of merit and an abuse of the judicial process.

This ruling reinforces the earlier decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had also upheld Diri’s election.

The Court of Appeal had previously dismissed Sylva’s appeal, stating that he failed to provide credible evidence to support his claims.

Similarly, the tribunal had rejected the petition filed by Sylva and the APC, concluding that they did not present substantial evidence to challenge the outcome of the governorship election.

With this final verdict, the Supreme Court has put to rest any doubts about Diri’s legitimacy as the governor of Bayelsa state.
