The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has spoken out against the unfair treatment of its members in several public universities across the country.
According to the union’s chairperson, Prof. Jurbe Molwus, some lecturers have faced illegal termination or suspension, denial of promotion, and withheld salaries.
Molwus highlighted specific cases at universities like LASU, KSU, EBSU, AAU, FUTO, and COOU, where lecturers have been targeted for their union activities or stance against wrongdoing. He emphasized that these actions have caused significant hardship for the affected members and contributed to the brain drain in Nigerian universities.
The union is calling for an end to the victimization of its members and urging the judiciary to address related cases fast. Molwus said that the continuous harassment of ASUU members prevents academic freedom and hinders the progress of Nigerian universities.
