The Electronic Media Content Association of Nigeria, EMCOAN, has hosted the second edition of the Nigeria media content exhibition featuring content makers in the country and abroad.
The three-day Nigerian Electronic Media Content Expo and Awards (NEMCEA) 2023 which started on Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 explored opportunities in TV, Radio and Media Content
EMCOAN, organized the event as stakeholders in the TV, Radio, Film, Online and Broadcast Industry on Tuesday 22nd, August, 2023 converged at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos state.
With Nigeria as one of the biggest electronic media content markets in Africa, industry players believe Africa’s most populous country now has a content market to cater for its huge electronic media content industry.
In her welcome address, the EMCOAN President, Jibe Ologeh, represented by the Vice President, Mr. Theophilus Akatugba said the aim of the event is to look at different business models across the broad spectrum of different platforms that the digital space and technology have afforded.
While declaring the event opened, the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. BLDR. Nwifuru Francis Ogbonna (FNIOB, GGCEHF, FCAI) represented by the Commissioner for ICT Ebonyi State, Hon. Comrade Machiavelli Tochukwu Uzor, commended the organizers of the event for their foresight in recognizing and promoting local and home grown talents as well as their commitment to fostering an environment that nurtures creativity and innovation.
He appreciated the tremendous efforts and contributions of media practitioners, content creators, broadcasters and technology innovators who are at the forefront of this transformation journey.
He said, “let us remember that the power of electronic media lies not only in it’s ability to entertain but also in its capacity to inform, educate, enlighten and inspire positive change. Let us leverage this power to build a better Nigeria, where our stories are celebrated, our talents are nurtured and our voices.
“Let on this note, declare this epoch making event open in the name of God the father, the son and the Holy Ghost.”
In his opening speech, the NEMCEA 2023 Project Director, Alayande Stephen T, said, “this 3 in 1 event being Content Market/Conferences and Awards are designed to purposely give all stakeholders (Content owners, producers, exhibitors, buyers, regulators, policy makers, TV channels, distributors, marketers, film makers, actors, aggregators) etc within the framework of broadcast media industry a sense of belonging of an annual content festival where the very best of the business and discourse around content are attained and achieved.”
The Panel Sessions
There are several panel sessions that were held during the day of the event which highlighted various challenges in the media industry.
In a panel discussion on “Reviving The Traditional Broadcast Media In Nigeria- The Role of Stakeholders (Content Producers, Broadcast Media And Advertisers) Current State, Business Module And The Future”, panelists agreed on recommendations to be communicated to industry stakeholders and relevant media agencies for information and implementation.
Panelists included the following: Moderator – Chinedu Ugwu (EMCOAN PRO, MD, Sablistus Ventures LTD), Dozie Okafor (Vice President, Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN) & MD, PHD Media Nigeria), Osamede Uwubanwmen (President, Advertisers Association of Nigeria), Shileola Ibironke (MD/CEO, Micromedia Group of Companies), High Chief Emeka Ossai ( Member BOT, EMCOAN/ MD, Golden Pyramid Productions, Nigeria), Theophilus Akatugba (VP EMCOAN/ CEO, Ovueta Nigeria Limited), Tunji Adekoya (GM, NTA, Lagos)
Part of the recommendations are as follows: “That there should be an extension of audio-visual version through YouTube, Twitter and others. That there is need to embrace modern technology and platforms to stay relevant in the digital age.That there should be favorable policies and regulations that encourage growth and innovation in the broadcast industry.”
In a panel discussion on “DEVELOPING AND FUNDING CONTENT CREATION FOR SOCIAL MEDIA, RADIO AND TV IN DIGITAL WORLD” , the panelists called for further dialogue amongst industry stakeholders on the challenges and solutions for developing and funding content in the electronic media eco-system.
The panelists are Seun Akinola Leo (PR Specialist), Maryam Apaokagi-Greene a.k.a Taaooma(Content Creator/Brand Influencer), Peter Armand-Boyo (Content Producer), Alhaha Aminah Muhammad (MD, Aims Media Company Ltd), Dr. Victor Okhai (President, Directors Guild of Nigeria), Olugbenga Ayobami-Wyse (Content Creator with Top Radio FM) and moderated by Kingsley Omoefe (MD, Golden Heritage Ltd).
Part of the recommendations are as follows;”That content creators should go for training in order to equip themselves to be more professional. They should learn the rudiment of the business before practicing. Even after learning it, they should never stop getting training from professional bodies.That content creators should have a mentor. Have a mentor, preferably a veteran as a mentor who can guide them and make their work unique.
“That everyone who want to be a successful content creator should not start with the motive of making money hurriedly but rather they should passionately believe in themselves, hard work and focus on the bigger picture, once this is done, money and reward will come.”
In a panel on “CURBING THE SCOURGE OF UNWHOLESOME PRACTICES IN THE MEDIA INDUSTRY AND LICENSING, DISTRIBUTION, CO-PRODUCTION, AND COLLABORATION AS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT IN THE EMERGING AFRICA CONTENT ECONOMY”, the panelists extensively dissected the topics at hand.
The panelists in this session are; High Chief Emeka Ossai (EMCOAN BOT Member), Dr. Victor Okhai (President, Directors Guild of Nigeria), Ehi Ohiani (Head of Click Naija), Omooba Deji Irawo (MD, Basilia International Communications), Theophilus Akatugba (MD, Ovueta Nigeria Limited) and moderated by Chinedu Ugwu (PRO, EMCOAN & MD, Sablistus Ventures)
Part of the recommendations are as follows; “That Industry stakeholders should have a court to arbitrate when there are issues. There must be issues. Even in the advance worlds, there are issues..
“That the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN) should also have arbitration council. That each organization should be held accountable for their member’s conduct and practices while implementing mechanism for transparency. ”
The Evening event titled NEMCEA 2023 Sponsors/Stakeholders Dinner powered by Ebonyi State Government and ADRON Homes. Comrade Tochukwu Uzoh Commissioner for ICT Ebonyi State represented the Governor at the Dinner where networking, connection and business opportunities were the central focal of the nite. During the Dinner, ADRON Homes represented by Mrs. Comfort Ogundele ( Director, Public Affairs, ADRON Homes) made a powerful presentation to the Ebonyi State delegation and the Stakeholders in attendance.
