Facebook to Limit Spammy Content

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde

Meta is introducing new measures to tackle spam content on Facebook, aiming to improve the platform’s feed experience and support creators of original content.

These updates prioritize fresh and relevant posts while limiting the reach and monetization of manipulative content.

According to Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, “We’ve heard from users that Facebook Feed doesn’t always surface fresh and engaging content that people enjoy, and spammy posts often crowd out authentic voices. Our goal is to continue creating an environment where creators who invest in meaningful content are recognised and rewarded. These changes are part of our long-term investment in making Facebook a platform where creators can grow and people can connect through high-quality content.”

The key updates include:

– Reducing the visibility of spam content: Spam networks creating multiple accounts to share the same content will face reduced reach. Accounts flooding the platform with duplicate posts or excessive hashtags won’t be eligible for monetization.
– Strengthening enforcement against fake engagement and impersonation: Meta is enhancing its efforts to detect and remove fake accounts and pages. In 2024, over 100 million fake pages and 23 million impersonating accounts were removed. New features will be added to Moderation Assist to detect and auto-hide comments from potential fake identities. Creators can also report impersonators directly in comments.
– Testing a comments feature to signal irrelevant or out-of-context comments.
– Enhancing protection for creators and support for original content: Meta is improving Rights Manager to help creators protect their content and providing updated guidance on creating successful content.

These changes aim to promote high-quality contents and support creators on the platform.
