Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has unveiled plans to revolutionize the state’s education sector.
Speaking at the 20th convocation of the state university of science and technology, Mbah announced a significant allocation of funds for research purposes in state-owned tertiary institutions, starting next year.
The governor emphasized the importance of experiential learning, stating that universities should drive technological advancement. He said, “Universities are meant to spur technological advancement. It is in line with this philosophy that I announced a new policy requiring all state-owned tertiary institutions in Enugu State to henceforth deliver Experiential Learning to our students.”
Mbah explained that this new policy would require a multifaceted approach, involving changes in planning, budgeting, curriculum reform, assessment, promotions, and research. He also highlighted the need for substantial funding for research purposes, which would be made available to state-owned tertiary institutions.
In addition to these initiatives, Mbah announced that his administration has committed over N1.6 billion to expand the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) and alleviate space constraints at Park Lane.
Furthermore, hundreds of millions of naira have been allocated to various programs, including the establishment of a multi-purpose laboratory, water reticulation, and rehabilitation of buildings at the College of Medicine.
The governor also revealed plans to establish a Centre for Experiential Learning, which would serve as a hub for professors to immerse themselves in experiential learning and pass it on to their students. Mbah said, “We would be setting up a Centre for Experiential Learning here. It would be an experiential hub where professors will be wholly immersed in Experiential Learning, which would be passed on to their students.”
