Fireboy’s new album features collaborations with legendary musicians Lagbaja and Seun Kuti, as well as Grammy winner Jon Baptiste and Lojay.
In an interview, Fireboy shared his excitement about working with these icons. He wanted to add a touch of nostalgia and depth to his album by collaborating with Nigerian music legends.
Fireboy recalled his experience recording with Lagbaja, who wore his signature mask throughout the session. He was unable to see Lagbaja’s face, which added to the mystery of the collaboration.
Fireboy admired Lagbaja’s unique approach to music and his commitment to his art.
Fireboy also credited Olamide, the A&R and YBNL label boss, for suggesting Seun Kuti for a track. He described Seun Kuti as an amazing and funny person who brought a special energy to the recording session.
Fireboy imagined Seun Kuti performing in a dark room with a spotlight shining down, and it fit perfectly with the song.
One of the songs on the album is named after Wande Coal, a seminal Afropop star. Fireboy recorded the song in 2021 and felt it was a tribute to Wande Coal’s style. He aimed to capture the essence of Wande Coal’s music from 2015-2016.
The entire album is a tribute to African music legends and a testament to Fireboy’s growth as an artist.
Fireboy’s goal was to create an album that would take listeners on a journey through time, bringing memories and emotions. He believes that music has the power to take us to another era, and he hopes his album will do just that.
