Lagos State has earned the undesirable distinction of being the top city for traffic congestion in the Global Traffic Congestion Rankings of 2023.
The rankings, conducted by Traffic Index, scrutinize traffic conditions in cities with a population of at least 500,000 worldwide.
Following closely behind, Riga, the capital and largest city of Latvia, secured the second position, while Tehran, the capital and largest city of Iran, claimed the third spot in the list.
Meanwhile, Mexico City in Mexico, Mumbai in India, and Krakow in Poland secured the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively.
The Traffic Index website, built on the foundation of Google Maps’ traffic layer, serves as a platform to actively monitor real-time traffic situations globally.
It assesses various cities based on factors contributing to congestion, including accidents, traffic overload, construction, and even pedestrians impacting traffic flow.
The causes of traffic congestion are diverse and can range from accidents to construction projects, with pedestrians incorrectly crossing roads or impeding vehicles also playing a role. Notably, in developing countries, the problem is exacerbated by issues like poorly maintained roads and inadequate connectivity, among other contributing factors.
