Nigerians Not Benefiting From Democratic Experience- Kate Henshaw

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

Nigerian Actress and activist Kate Henshaw expressed her disappointment and concern about Nigeria’s state, during a special Democracy Day program on Channels Television.

Despite 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, she believes there’s little to show for it, and the majority of Nigerians aren’t benefiting from the country’s democratic experience.

Kate Henshaw emphasized that the longevity of democratic rule means nothing if it doesn’t address the needs of citizens. She questioned the purpose of democracy if it doesn’t impact people’s lives. She said, “There is no middle class and we cannot tell any more lies to ourselves.” She also said, “Everything around us is crumbling and Nigerians are barely holding on by the skin of their teeth.”

While acknowledging the situation, Henshaw urged Nigerians not to lose hope. She stated the importance of holding governments accountable. She said, “We cannot keep quiet. There must be justice, equity, and security for the people — for their lives and property.”

Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful for a better future. She said, “But I still hold on to hope that we will have a country to live in, for our children — something they can build on.”
