Ogun Government Denies Renaming Tai Solarin University of Education

By Oyinkansayo Wole-Bodunde.

The Ogun State Government has denied rumors that Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun has been renamed to Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona University of Education.

According to the government, an existing institution, Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu, already bears the monarch’s name.

The government explained that Tai Solarin University of Education was originally established as Ogun State College of Education in 1977. It was later renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994, and then Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005. However, due to controversies surrounding its accreditation, the institution was split into two: Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun and Tai Solarin College of Education in Omu. The latter was later renamed Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in 2022.

The government clarified that Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recent remarks during the 8th Fidau prayer for the late Awujale referred to past efforts to honor the monarch and did not mention renaming Tai Solarin University of Education, which is now under federal jurisdiction.
